DSDN 171 Assignment Ten

The Post Modernism and ‘remix’ era has gained public approval by re – introducing ornament and adding much needed colour and flare to contemporary design. It has created an individualistic and original meaning behind art as we see it today. The curve of male and female design is definitely still continuing.

This graphic design piece has used colour effectively while maintaining warped buildings that line a street. A lady can be seen wearing a bright cape like gown with her back turned. She dwarfs the suburban area making it seem insignificant as she looks down toward the small community. ‘Naïve’ is written in bold smack bang in the centre of the work.

An internal meaning resides – ‘naïve’ explains how everybody in society is a follower. Nobody is making moves toward a personal idealology and the definition of originality has been lost. The houses are identical which further backs up the idea of mainstream – people can’t choose for themselves, they have been told how to act, what to wear and what lifestyle to live.

DSDN 171 Assignment Nine

Design can be a powerful tool in a certain society’s taste. Different cities and areas have individual ways of expressing their meaning and culture. Music, personalities, sport, fashion, mainstream media and even random tagging on walls and streets creates a togetherness that is unique to the harbouring city.

Wellington, as an example, is New Zealand’s design capital in my view. It is the perfect place to learn your creative trade. Wellington begins the fads, fashions and music movements throughout the country and even internationally.

Something as simple as chalk writing on a pavement or wall can stop people in their tracks and be inspired to follow their dreams and ideas on life. Imaginations are grasped and in turn, design evolves, movements are started.

I have walked around Wellington and seen numerous tags, stencils and chalk writing and thought about my future, what I can achieve with design. I am in the process of starting a fashion label and it has been random scribbling that has gained my forward attention.

RIGHTEOUS LIFE
NOT LIVED FOR LOVE
MAY BE SHALLOW - Instead of walking past somebody on a street and thinking 'that's a cool shirt', I tried to combine the aesthetic qualities as well as a meaning behind Wellington's culture, to ignite our brains for a few minutes after seeing this t shirt.

Chalk words on Victoria Street - a meaning behind design.

My own adapted version - still in it's draft stages but it is to grace a black t shirt.

DSDN 171 Assignment Eight

Design has evolved simultaneously with the need of mass production. Cheap materials and the ability to produce multiples have overridden the time and effort needed to create a single piece of art. The spirit and individuality of design have been replaced with an unselfish social agenda to standardize beauty and unify taste by introducing the language of the machine and computer.

I am largely in agreement with ‘function x economy’.  Design needed to adapt with the social and economic situations of the leading governments around the globe. Individuality and uniqueness of one’s free mind will always shine through, creating an ever developing view of design that will never be fully attached to the mainstream.

Today science and art go hand in hand. One could marvel at the technological advances of the iPhone and also be mesmerized by its aesthetic qualities. Science is engrained in our make-up but art has a special pure form that can’t be ignored. It has an attractiveness that science will never gain. Science though, has revolutionized the way design is viewed in the modern world and has developed a new style of art that is all around, to be seen by everyone.
