DSDN 171 Assignment Nine

Design can be a powerful tool in a certain society’s taste. Different cities and areas have individual ways of expressing their meaning and culture. Music, personalities, sport, fashion, mainstream media and even random tagging on walls and streets creates a togetherness that is unique to the harbouring city.

Wellington, as an example, is New Zealand’s design capital in my view. It is the perfect place to learn your creative trade. Wellington begins the fads, fashions and music movements throughout the country and even internationally.

Something as simple as chalk writing on a pavement or wall can stop people in their tracks and be inspired to follow their dreams and ideas on life. Imaginations are grasped and in turn, design evolves, movements are started.

I have walked around Wellington and seen numerous tags, stencils and chalk writing and thought about my future, what I can achieve with design. I am in the process of starting a fashion label and it has been random scribbling that has gained my forward attention.

RIGHTEOUS LIFE
NOT LIVED FOR LOVE
MAY BE SHALLOW - Instead of walking past somebody on a street and thinking 'that's a cool shirt', I tried to combine the aesthetic qualities as well as a meaning behind Wellington's culture, to ignite our brains for a few minutes after seeing this t shirt.

My own adapted version - still in it's draft stages but it is to grace a black t shirt.

DSDN 171 Assignment Eight

Design has evolved simultaneously with the need of mass production. Cheap materials and the ability to produce multiples have overridden the time and effort needed to create a single piece of art. The spirit and individuality of design have been replaced with an unselfish social agenda to standardize beauty and unify taste by introducing the language of the machine and computer.

I am largely in agreement with ‘function x economy’.  Design needed to adapt with the social and economic situations of the leading governments around the globe. Individuality and uniqueness of one’s free mind will always shine through, creating an ever developing view of design that will never be fully attached to the mainstream.

Today science and art go hand in hand. One could marvel at the technological advances of the iPhone and also be mesmerized by its aesthetic qualities. Science is engrained in our make-up but art has a special pure form that can’t be ignored. It has an attractiveness that science will never gain. Science though, has revolutionized the way design is viewed in the modern world and has developed a new style of art that is all around, to be seen by everyone.

DSDN 171 Assignment Seven

Our Symbolic Universe.

Before 15 years ago social communication was still rather primitive. To connect with friends and family was delayed and lagged. Talking was confined to either face to face or a home land line. With the creation of mobile phones and texting the speed of knowledge quickened. With the ability to contact anybody at any given time was paramount to the social evolution of human beings. These mini computers that we take for granted are of huge importance and without them society would be lost. They have created our own symbolic universe.

Social networking sites have even further developed the way we live our lives. People born from this day will have facebook ingrained into their make-up. Our future has been defined by these websites, people have the power to share whatever they want about themselves enabling social interaction to gain a new level entirely.

Historically symbolic universes promoted a certain group, country or society by their ability to produce resources and provide progress. Mobile phones and social networking websites have united cultures and helped our world grow. Our social reality in this point in time is socially constructed.

DSDN Assignment Six

I agree and disagree.
In this day and age people want to share their creations with populations all around the world. Mass culture has affected society easily enough to change people’s way of thinking. For example, rather than going to a museum to see a painting they can marvel at their iPhone version every day. Therefore in order for the art to be available to anyone, mass production is the only option in order for the creator gain a profit.

The original of an art piece will always have more aura and personality. Every detail is precisely as the creator would have wanted. If one were to get their hands on an authentic print, they would know the artist has come into contact with it and therefore can share this intimate relationship with the artist.

There definitely is a role for authenticity. If one knew where to look they could find a Rolex watch for five dollars but people prefer something real and truthful. The authentic form is always more promising and reliable than a copy or fake version of the original. It guarantees the real is worth the sometimes overwhelming cost.
