DSDN 171 Assignment Four

“The evolution of
culture is synonymous with the removal of ornament
from objects of daily use.” – Adolf Loos

I disagree.

Instead of removing ornament altogether, why couldn’t ornament just evolve in itself? People of that time were fascinated with floral, emotional and expressive designs. They helped bring out a human’s character. As with last week’s assignment-everyone has their own likes and dislikes. Not everybody would like looking at a boring, naked and bare design. Adolf Loo’s ideas are of male quality-straight lines, logic and mathematics. Experimentation and originality is what evolves culture. The irrational female qualities of curves and fantasy is what started the change of classical Greek design.

This tea pot, designed by Marianne Brant in 1924, is a classic example of Adolf Loo’s views. It is stripped of its decoration and ornament, creating a cold and bland feeling.
